Thlog- Week 1
I’m so far enjoying this class,
learning about genres. The assigned readings are very informative and
interesting at the same time. We are learning that there are so many genres of
writing and conventions that make up the genre. By being able to identify the
conventions within genre, we’ll be able to identify, evaluate genres and
transform into a new genre when we desire to.
When I was reading Dirk’s article, Navigating Genres, I learned that
ability to identify a genre is important because it lets you accomplish your
goal whether it is getting a job or winning loved one’s heart. Another point
that stood out to me is that determining location is the key in choosing and
writing a proper form of genre. It was interesting to know that any form of
writing could fall under certain category of genre. Writing a product review, a
letter to loved ones, and even Facebook comment can be considered as own genre.
My favorite article so far is Two Kinds of Thinking by Peter Elbow
because it clearly shows the difference between 1st and 2nd
order thinking. 1st order thinking can bring out person’s genuine
opinions and allow their writing to be more creative. On the other hand, 2nd
order thinking is critical thinking that allows a person to bring out very well
thought-out outlines. This article at the end lets us know how to combine both
1st and 2nd order writing to make our writings more
valuable.
Learning about genres can relate to
my everyday life because I always write whether it’s Facebook comment or little
note to myself. By learning about genres and conventions, I will be able to
easily transform genre in a way that my writing can bring out specific action
that I desired to bring.
